The highly anticipated live-action God of War series on Prime Video has been thrown into turmoil after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear during a stunt in June, forcing Amazon MGM Studios to recast the iconic role of Kratos.
Hurst, best known for his role in Sons of Anarchy and cast in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film Odyssey, had been filming the series since February in Vancouver. He reportedly gained 40 pounds of muscle to embody the Spartan warrior. However, the injury required surgery and a recovery period that extends into next year, making it impossible to meet the production schedule.
Production Delayed and Footage Scrapped
According to Deadline, filming has been halted and will not resume until at least October. All footage featuring Hurst as Kratos must be reshot with a new actor. The series had planned two seasons, but the setback has forced a significant restructuring of the timeline.
Hurst was set to star alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus, Kratos' son. The show's cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Sonya Walger as Freya.
Background of the God of War Franchise
The series adapts the Norse mythology arc from the critically acclaimed PlayStation games. The 2018 God of War reboot earned a 94 Metacritic score on PS4, while 2022's God of War Ragnarok scored 94 on PS5. Both follow Kratos and Atreus on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos' wife, Faye.
A new game, God of War Laufey, was announced on June 2, marking the first title in the series without Kratos as the main character. It will follow Faye's story in Everywhen, the afterlife of gods from all mythologies.

The recasting is a devastating blow to fans who had anticipated Hurst's portrayal. The actor's dedication to the role, including intense physical training, made the setback particularly heartbreaking. Amazon MGM Studios has not yet announced a replacement, but casting is reportedly underway.
