Celebrity Hairstylist George Northwood Embraces Fatherhood via Surrogacy

George Northwood, the renowned hairdresser to the stars who crafted Meghan Markle's wedding reception hairstyle, is now celebrating a deeply personal milestone: becoming a father through surrogacy. The 47-year-old Luton-born stylist, also famous for creating Alexa Chung's signature bob, has welcomed a son named Elijah, born via a surrogate mother in Mexico.

A Journey of Love and Nerves

Northwood, who grew up gay and never believed fatherhood was possible, described the emotional rollercoaster of his surrogacy journey. "One week of Elijah, totally in love and tuning in to each other," he said of his three-month-old son. "Hats off to the single parents out there." Before traveling to Mexico to collect Elijah, Northwood shared his mixed feelings: "How am I feeling after booking flights to Mexico for early March? Elated, excited and yet, also a bundle of nerves."

To bond with his unborn child, he created playlists for his surrogate to play to Elijah and sent voice notes so the baby would recognize his voice. "I've made several playlists for my surrogate to play to Elijah which has felt quite emotional," Northwood explained. He added that daily text contact with his surrogate helped ease the distance, while preparing the nursery in London became a therapeutic process. "I find that nesting reduces anxiety," he noted.

Surrogacy Details and Legal Context

Last summer, Northwood revealed that the 35-year-old surrogate mother was preparing for embryo implantation, with medical tests completed and insurance in place. "Everything feels as if it's moving pretty swiftly now," he said at the time. "My surrogate is going to be receiving the embryo transfer soon and back in London I'm getting ready, too." In Britain, it is illegal to pay surrogate mothers anything beyond reasonable expenses, highlighting the ethical and legal complexities of surrogacy arrangements.

Northwood expressed gratitude for his surrogate, stating, "I really lucked out going on this journey with such a wonderful surrogate." He acknowledged the life-changing nature of parenthood, saying, "I know life is going to change a lot and I want to enjoy fun times before it does."
