The former Mercedes-Benz car showroom on Liverpool Road in Birkdale could be transformed into a new 433sq/m convenience store, two smaller retail units and a fitness studio under plans submitted to Sefton Council.

The scheme has been submitted by Bowman Riley on behalf of AIM Capital Ltd, which says it has been in detailed discussions with a national retailer about the proposed convenience store. The operator has not yet been named, but AIM Capital says the 433sq/m unit has been designed to meet the requirements of a leading national retailer and would operate in a typical small-scale convenience store format, providing day-to-day shopping needs for the community.
The remaining space would be divided into two retail units of around 90sq/m each, alongside a 105sq/m studio intended for a leisure use such as Pilates or personal training.
Site background
The proposals would bring the vacant site back into use after the Mercedes-Benz dealership ceased trading in April 2025, following an extended period of trading difficulties and a change in strategy by Mercedes.
In their application, Bowman Riley said: “The local area currently relies on out-of-town stores for even basic shopping needs, and this new store can meet day-to-day shopping needs in a highly convenient location that is walkable and prominent. There has been extensive dialogue with end operators, and this proposal reflects the expressed requirements of a leading national retailer, which will occupy the convenience store unit as the anchor occupier.”
