Generational Beauty Ideals: How Brits' Perfect Partner Preferences Shift with Age

A comprehensive new survey has unveiled the distinct physical characteristics that Britons from different generations consider the 'perfect' man and woman. Conducted by experts at the CREO Clinic, a plastic surgery clinic based on London's Harley Street, the study polled 1,000 participants to understand how our ideals of attractiveness transform through life stages.

The Study's Methodology and Key Findings

Participants were categorised into four generational groups: Boomers (born 1946–1964), Gen X (1965–1980), Millennials (1981–1996), and Gen Z (1997–2012). They were questioned about their ideal partner's age, eye colour and shape, nose, lips, hair, height, body type, and skin tone. Using the most common responses from each generation, the clinic created AI-generated images to visualise these preferences in real life.

Overall, the research demonstrates a clear evolution in attractiveness standards. Preferences shift from lighter hair in Boomer women to darker hair and more athletic body types in Millennials and Gen Z. For men, inverted triangle or trapezoid builds are generally seen as most attractive, while the hourglass figure remains the preferred body type for women across all age groups. Eye colour trends move from blue in Boomers to brown in later generations, and wavy hair is typically favoured for men, whereas straight hair is more often preferred for women.

Boomers: Classic and Traditional Preferences

As the oldest participants, Boomers defined the perfect man as having almond-shaped blue eyes, a button nose, full lips, and a rectangular face shape. Dark brown, wavy hair was the favourite, with only three percent saying the perfect man would have grey hair—highlighting a gap between preference and reality, as greying typically begins in one's 30s. A lean, trapezoid, or classic build was top, with a height of 5’7″ to 5’9″.

For the perfect woman, Boomers preferred round blue eyes, a button nose, full lips, and a rounded or oval face shape. Light blonde, straight hair was the top choice, with an hourglass figure and a height between 5’7″ and 5’9″.

Gen X: Transitional Trends Emerge

Gen X showed a shift toward almond-shaped brown eyes for men, along with a button nose and heart-shaped lips. Dark brown hair with a short fade was most preferred, and a trapezoid build was popular, with a taller height preference of 5’10” to 6’0″.

For Gen X women, almond-shaped brown eyes, a button nose, and full lips were favoured, along with a round face shape and straight, light blonde hair of medium length. The preferred height was shorter at 5’4″ to 5’6″, while an hourglass figure remained the top body shape.

Millennials: Athletic Builds and Darker Features

Millennials continued the trend with almond-shaped brown eyes for men, button noses, full lips, and an inverted triangle face. Dark brown, wavy hair cut into a short fade topped the list. Height preferences increased to 5’10” to 6’0″, and an athletic build—characterised by broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and a muscular upper body—was preferred.

For women, rounded brown eyes were popular, alongside a button nose, full lips, and a rounded face shape. Dark brown, wavy hair of medium-long length was favoured, with a height of 5’4″ to 5’6″ and an hourglass figure.

Gen Z: Modern Ideals with Distinct Contrasts

Gen Z, the youngest group, preferred men with almond-shaped brown eyes, a button nose, full lips, and an inverted triangle face shape. Dark brown, wavy hair in a short fade continued the generational trend, with a height of 5’7″ to 5’9″ and an athletic build.

For the perfect Gen Z woman, almond-shaped brown eyes, a button nose, a heart-shaped face, and full lips were key. Long, black, straight hair was favoured, contrasting sharply with older generations' preference for lighter, shorter hair. An hourglass shape and height of 5’7″ to 5’9″ completed the ideal.

The clinic noted that lip fillers remain popular in the UK, with Gen Z showing increased interest in lip-targeting treatments. Additionally, over 2 million liposuction surgeries were performed globally in 2024, underscoring the demand for sculpted figures.
