Gen Z Women Ditch Handbags for Night Out, Survey Finds
Gen Z Women Ditch Handbags, Survey Finds

Nearly a third of young women are abandoning the traditional handbag on nights out, opting instead to stash essentials in their bras, a new survey reveals. Among women aged 18-29, 28% regularly skip taking a bag when socialising, and 73% have tucked a phone into their underwear, according to research commissioned by Echo Falls.

Hands-Free Hack Gains Popularity

The survey found that 64% of under-30s have stored bank cards in their bra, 63% have placed ID, 61% keys, and 51% lip gloss. The trend reflects a desire for freedom: 34% say skipping a handbag feels freer, and 44% consider handbags old-fashioned. Older generations have noticed the shift, with 75% of over-45s saying handbags are disappearing from dance floors.

Changing Night-Out Habits

Carrying cash is down 33%, wearing a coat is out for 24%, and dress-to-suffer staples like kitten heels (21%), bodycon dresses (19%), and high heels (17%) are declining. Traditions like dancing around a handbag (28%), queuing outside clubs (19%), and requesting songs from DJs (19%) are also fading. Comfort now beats glamour for 30% of under-30s when choosing an outfit.

Echo Falls Creates Innovative Solution

In response, Echo Falls has launched a limited-edition bright blue bra top with compartments for a phone, bank card, ID, keys, lip gloss, and gum. It includes two cup inserts: one holds a chilled 125ml serve of wine, the other water. Taran Dhillon, brand manager at Echo Falls, said: “We’ve been listening to our audience, and the research clearly shows that women are ditching handbags, but no-pockets fashion is letting them down. That’s why we created this playful bra top, which keeps your drinks chilled, your essentials secure and your hands free.”

Celebrity Endorsement

Presenter and podcaster GK Barry commented: “I cannot tell you the number of times I've gone out thinking, 'I'm not taking a bag, I'll be fine,' and then five minutes later I'm stood there holding my phone, my lip gloss, my keys and somehow everyone else's belongings as well. Women's clothes never have proper pockets, bags ruin your outfit, and sometimes you just want to be hands-free with your friends and your drink.”
