FA Chief Explains Tuchel's New Contract Before World Cup

FA chief Mark Bullingham has given an insight into Thomas Tuchel's new deal, insisting they did not “move the goalposts” by giving the German a new contract. Tuchel was hired on a win-or-bust basis for this World Cup, but the Football Association then rewarded him with a contract until 2028.

Bullingham's Confidence in Tuchel

Bullingham says they still firmly believe that Tuchel has all the qualities to win the World Cup this summer and there are performance clauses written into the new deal. He praised Tuchel's energy and charisma, stating: “I think the energy and charisma he brings is amazing. In his own environment he’s incredibly dynamic and energetic but he absolutely owns the room and owns the camp and he’s brilliant at connecting with everyone.”

Adapting to International Football

Bullingham also highlighted how Tuchel has adapted to international management: “I think with him also in the beginning, you never know how a club manager will adapt to international. It is a different flow, it's a different rhythm. He's done it brilliantly.”

Performance Clauses

When asked about potential failure, Bullingham said he is not thinking about Tuchel failing this summer but confirmed there are clauses in his deal: “There's performance clauses in every single contract with the FA, right? I'm not going to go into any detail on what they are. I'm just not going to go there. The reality is we're really confident he's going to be our coach in 2028.”
