Emmerdale Star Isabel Hodgins Announces Departure After 20 Years
Emmerdale actress Isabel Hodgins, who has portrayed Victoria Sugden on the ITV soap since 2006, has openly discussed her decision to leave the show after nearly two decades. The 32-year-old star admitted to feeling surprisingly unemotional during her final scenes, attributing this to exhaustion from her pregnancy and the demanding commute between Manchester and Leeds for filming.
Exhaustion Overshadows Emotional Goodbye
Despite her long-standing connection to Emmerdale, Hodgins found herself "ready" to step away as she prepares for motherhood. "I thought I would be really emotional when I filmed my final scenes. Emmerdale is all I have ever known," she confessed. "But pregnancy does funny things to you, and the truth is I felt ready not to have to film on Emmerdale!"
Her departure coincides with a dramatic storyline where Victoria murders her serial killer brother, John Sugden, played by Oliver Farnworth. In upcoming episodes, Victoria will hand herself over to the police, marking a significant exit for the character.
Commuting Challenges and Future Plans
Hodgins highlighted the physical toll of her daily drives from Manchester to Leeds, stating, "By the end, I felt exhausted, and I knew it was time to have a rest before the baby arrives." She emphasized that becoming a mother will be her "biggest role" yet, expressing confidence in her husband, Adam Whitehead, as he transitions into fatherhood.
The soap's producers have left the door open for her return, allowing Hodgins to decide when she might reprise her role. "They told me it was up to me when I come back to the soap, which is lovely," she noted. "I’ve been in Emmerdale for 19 years, and it’s been a huge part of my life."
Personal Life and Rapid Family Expansion
Hodgins and Whitehead, who met in a gym three years ago, are eagerly anticipating their first child. The couple had initially planned a wedding for 2026 but accelerated their family plans. "Originally, we booked a wedding for 2026, but then I realised I didn’t want to wait that long to start a family," Hodgins explained. "This was always the plan!"
She described the pregnancy as a "roller-coaster" but expressed gratitude for avoiding severe sickness. As she steps away from the soap, Hodgins looks forward to focusing on her new chapter, balancing the excitement of motherhood with the need for rest and preparation.
