Emma Heming Willis has revealed that she felt guilty about celebrating her 50th birthday amid husband Bruce Willis’ devastating health battles.
The Die Hard star, 71, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023. His loved ones have rallied around him ever since, raising awareness for the illness.
Struggling with celebration
During an appearance on the Making Space podcast, Emma said she struggled to think how she would celebrate her milestone birthday in June. Her friends convinced her she had to do something.
“The celebration was lovely,” she told host Hoda Kotb. “I have not really been in the celebratory feelings of late. I was unsure if I really wanted to do anything. But I had a friend of mine who kept sort of pushing and saying, 'You don’t wanna miss out on your 50th. You have to celebrate in some form or fashion.'
“I really sat with that, and I thought about it. And I thought, 'You know what? I don’t wanna look back and think, why didn’t I celebrate 50?' It is something to celebrate. My mum and some friends put together this really lovely party at the house.”
Instead of a huge affair, Emma – who shares two children with Bruce – enjoyed a lowkey night surrounded by friends and family, with tacos and margaritas.
Wrestling with guilt
She explained that she “wrestled” with guilt throughout the celebration, amid Bruce’s ongoing health struggles.
“I always wrestle with it. I think guilt is something that I am always carrying, but I’ve learned that it is really not helpful,” she continued. “What I know is I always go back to, ‘what would my husband want for me?’ He would want me to have a big, fun bash. He would want me to celebrate my life with my friends and family, and that is what I always think about when guilt of any sort comes in front of me.
“I’m really happy that I did - we brought together my friends, some family, and it was a really lovely, intimate night. On top of it, it was the Knicks final and they won! It was a great celebration.”
Diagnosis and symptoms
Bruce stepped away from the spotlight over his health in 2022. The following year, his loved ones – including Emma and his ex-wife, Demi Moore – issued a public statement announcing his diagnosis.
During a recent appearance on the Bossticks podcast, Emma clarified his symptoms, sharing that his memory has not been impacted.
“The one that Bruce has affects language. But there’s another variant that will affect behaviour and another one that could affect movement,” she said.
“That’s a different part of the brain. So when people say, ‘Oh, does he remember who you are?’ Well, he does because he doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, he has FTD. I think that’s a very common misconception that, when you think of dementia, we think of memory loss.”
Bruce was initially diagnosed with aphasia in 2022 and retired from acting shortly after. Emma explained that she first noticed his FTD signs when his childhood stutter returned.
She added: “I think what you experience with any form of dementia is it just takes. You know these diseases they take and they take, sometimes very slowly and you are grieving different losses all the time. So you are constantly in grief. I’ve just learned how to navigate it.”
