Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, star of the new Netflix series 'Man on Fire', has revealed that he does not actually speak Spanish, despite his character John Creasy using the language in the show. The actor learned his Spanish lines specifically for the role.
In an interview with Revolt News, Abdul-Mateen said: 'I speak English... If you teach me Spanish I can pick that up. I can pray in Arabic. And I can say a little bit of stuff in Portuguese. So I think we're probably still at one [language]. But I can be impressive.'
The actor, known for his roles in Marvel films, also told CineXpress that he had not spoken Spanish since his teenage years. 'I wanted to get that right, I wanted to be respectful of the culture,' he explained. 'It's a beautiful language and I hadn't spoken Spanish since high school, many years ago.'
'Man on Fire' is an adaptation of A.J. Quinnell’s book series, previously made into a 2004 film starring Denzel Washington. The Netflix series follows former mercenary John Creasy as he battles PTSD and embarks on a revenge mission. The show also stars Alice Braga and Billie Boullet, and all seven episodes are now streaming on Netflix.
