Doctor Who Star Aisling Bea Hospitalised After Bread Knife Accident

Actress and comedian Aisling Bea, known for her role in the 2021 Doctor Who Christmas special, was rushed to hospital after a serious accident at home. The 43-year-old mother of one required stitches after slicing through her finger while cutting bread.

Sharing details on her Instagram stories, she showed her bandaged left index finger. "I sliced through my finger with a bread knife and had to go to A&E to get stitches," she said. In a further update, she joked: "A lot of nurses on here thought my finger was infected but it turns out that's simply 'just the colour of me'."

Filming in Australia

The accident comes as she completed filming in Australia on one of the biggest movies of her career. In August, she announced she had landed a major role in the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster Starman alongside Brendan Fraser.

Brendan plays Tom Adams, a futuristic architect who embarks on a groundbreaking mission to Mars, and she plays his love interest Julia Hanley, a "defiant and magnetic" Irish photographer. Marking the end of her shoot, she posted a series of images and videos from her time in Australia, many featuring Brendan alongside her.

Career Highlights

Aisling had a stratospheric rise after her career began in earnest in 2011, when she landed roles in comedy television series Cardinal Burns and Sharon Horgan's Dead Boss. In 2012, she became the first woman in 20 years (and only the second in its history) to win the Gilded Balloon So You Think You're Funny award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The following year, she was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards for her show C'est La Bea.

She has since appeared in sitcoms including Trollied, The Delivery Man and Living with Yourself, opposite Marvel icon Paul Rudd. She has also taken on dramatic roles in crime dramas The Fall and Hard Sun, and starred in the ITV drama series Quiz in 2020. She wrote and starred in the Channel 4 comedy series This Way Up from 2019-2021, winning the BAFTA 2020 British Academy Television Craft Award for Breakthrough Talent. In 2022, she received a nomination for British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for the series.
