'Did You Kill Emma?' Documentary Examines Emma Caldwell Murder Case
'Did You Kill Emma?' Explores Emma Caldwell Murder

A compelling new true crime documentary series is set to explore one of the UK's most troubling murder cases. The two-part series, titled Did You Kill Emma?, arrives on Prime Video today and delves into the controversial investigation surrounding the 2005 murder of Emma Caldwell.

The Case

Emma Caldwell, a 27-year-old sex worker, disappeared from Glasgow's red-light district in April 2005. Her remains were discovered five weeks later in Limefield Woods, South Lanarkshire. The case remained unsolved for nearly two decades, becoming one of Scotland's largest unsolved murders.

Iain Packer was eventually identified as the perpetrator and was imprisoned in 2024 for a minimum of 36 years, the second-longest sentence ever imposed by a Scottish court. The sentence trails only the 37-year minimum term given to the World's End killer Angus Sinclair in 2014.

The Documentary

Building on the Who Killed Emma? podcast by BBC journalist Sam Poling and the programme Catching a Killer: The Murder of Emma Caldwell, the documentary features exclusive interviews, archive footage, police evidence, and testimony from detectives and journalists who persisted with their investigations relentlessly throughout the years.

A summary states: 'The series reveals how one of Scotland's most controversial murder investigations unravelled in plain sight.'

At the core of Did You Kill Emma? is an interview between award-winning BBC journalist Poling and Packer, during which she confronted him over the allegations using evidence accumulated over the years. This tense and psychologically charged confrontation offers a rare and unsettling insight into the man suspected by many of being connected to the case.

The series also provides insight from the detectives who undertook the original investigative work but whose efforts were overlooked. It explores how critical opportunities were squandered to bring Packer to justice as the investigation's focus shifted in another direction.

Sentencing Remarks

Judge Lord Beckett, who delivered the sentence to Packer, said: 'You murdered a capable and compassionate, intelligent young woman who had planned to extricate herself from the difficult life she had been living.' He added: 'Emma was alone, in the dark, deprived of her phone and miles from any prospect of help.'

A summary of the show concludes: 'Compelling, emotional, and deeply unsettling, Did You Kill Emma? is more than a true crime documentary - it is a powerful examination of missed opportunities, persistence, and the long fight for justice.'

Did You Kill Emma? is released on Prime Video today.
