Davina McCall broke down in tears during a podcast episode as her best friend Sarah Hiscox revealed she had been 'frightened' for the TV star during her heroin addiction in the late 1980s. The former Big Brother host, now 58, opened up about the 'summer of love' era when ecstasy and illegal raves were 'everywhere', marking the start of what she called 'going really mad'.
Friend's Fear for Davina's Life
Sarah Hiscox, speaking on the podcast 'Begin Again with Davina McCall', described how Davina's drug use escalated beyond recreational ecstasy to heroin. 'You got bad and I could tell that it wasn't just like a couple of e. You were taking heroin, you know, and that to me, well, to most people with any sense, is incredibly dangerous,' Sarah said. She added: 'And I thought I was going to lose you and it wasn't just being the centre of attention at a party or... It was something much darker that had taken you over.'
Davina's 'Sliding Out of View'
Sarah recalled how Davina was 'kind of sliding out of view' and 'losing yourself'. She recounted a specific moment when she picked up Davina to take her to a Santana gig and told her she was 'really worried about' her. Davina was 'crumbling quite quickly', Sarah said, and she was scared. Davina admitted she had been 'a bit angry' but cried 'all the way' to the front door. She said she didn't want to let Sarah know how 'broken' she was, but knew she was 'f****d' and that was the 'end'. She added she was 'so full of shame' upon learning people had been talking about her behind her back.
A Wall Between Them
Sarah explained that heroin creates a 'wall' between people, and she could feel that wall. 'I wanted you to stop. I wanted you back because also I could feel — and you know what it's like with heroin — it puts a... it puts a wall between you both, and I could feel that wall,' she said. However, that conversation proved to be a 'huge turning point' for Davina, who 'didn't use again' after it. An emotional Davina embraced her friend and told her she was 'grateful'.
