Danny Dyer Gains a Stone from 12-Sausage Daily Diet for Rivals Role
Danny Dyer has disclosed that he put on a stone in weight after consuming a staggering 12 sausages per day while filming the second series of the Disney+ adaptation Rivals. The 48-year-old actor, who portrays wealthy, self-made electronics businessman Freddie Jones in the show based on Jilly Cooper's racy novel, admitted to living off a diet of junk food that left him feeling chubby and constipated.
Method Acting Leads to Unhealthy Eating Habits
Explaining his dietary choices, Dyer cited his commitment to method acting, stating that in his mind, the character Fred is meant to be chubby. Speaking on his podcast Live And Let Dyers with his daughter Dani, 29, he said: I've realised I'm quite method. While I was playing Fred, I have put on a stone. When questioned about his food intake, he confirmed a reliance on fast food and detailed his sausage-heavy routine.
Dyer described his process:
- Living alone in Bristol and relying on food delivery services.
- Purchasing 12-packs of sausages and cooking them all at once to prevent spoilage.
- Making sandwiches with up to five sausages each and snacking on the rest throughout the night, often with ketchup.
- Noting that this wasn't a nightly occurrence, as it would be unsustainable.
He also mentioned that the lack of olive oil in his diet contributed to constipation, highlighting the physical toll of his eating habits.
Filming Wraps and Series Details
The star-studded cast recently completed filming, with the first six episodes set to air in May. Dyer celebrated shaving off his moustache after filming, despite some fans preferring the facial hair. Last month, Disney+ released a trailer for the hotly-anticipated second series, teasing the return of key characters and new dramatic developments.
The main cast includes:
- David Tennant as Lord Tony Baddingham, a ruthless TV executive.
- Emily Atack as Sarah Stratton, a rising TV star.
- Alex Hassell as Rupert Campbell-Black, a Tory MP and Baddingham's rival.
- Aidan Turner as Declan O'Hara, a former BBC journalist.
- Nafessa Williams as Cameron Cook, an American TV producer.
- Bella Maclean as Taggie O'Hara.
The synopsis promises heightened drama in the 1980s setting, with marriages fracturing, illicit affairs, and long-buried secrets as rivalries intensify. The trailer confirms Lord Baddingham's survival from a previous attack and his return to conflict, with the series dubbed the naughtiest show on television and scheduled for release on May 15.
