Musician Damon Albarn engaged in a notably uncomfortable confrontation with television host Graham Norton during a recent episode of the BBC's flagship talk show. The Blur frontman, aged 57, appeared on the famous sofa alongside fellow guests Adrian Lester, Leo Woodall, Stephen Graham, and Kaley Cuoco to promote the upcoming Gorillaz tour.
Awkward On-Air Exchange Over Show Invitation
While sipping a drink, Albarn bluntly stated to Norton, "You haven't invited me back." The host responded defensively, saying, "Well, you're here now." Unwilling to let the matter drop, Albarn pressed further, recalling a previous encounter in a nightclub where he had questioned why he was never invited to the show.
Graham Norton appeared genuinely confused, responding, "What? I was in a nightclub?" Albarn reminded him, "Yeah, I was in a nightclub with you and I was like, 'Why am I never on your show?'" Norton insisted he had no recollection of the incident, suggesting he must have been "quite drunk" at the time.
Nightclub Memory Sparks Further Tension
Albarn retorted, "It must have been one of those nightclubs," to which Norton replied, "Yes it must have been. How funny. I may have blanked it from my mind out of awkwardness." The exchange highlighted the underlying tension between the musician and the veteran presenter.
Football Stadium Jibe Adds to Controversy
The Blur singer also made a pointed remark about Tottenham Hotspur during the conversation. When Norton mentioned that Gorillaz would be performing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, describing it as the band's "biggest ever gig," Albarn refused to acknowledge the venue by its proper name.
Instead, the avid Chelsea fan labeled it simply as "a large music venue in north London," demonstrating his continued rivalry with the football club.
Reflecting on Oasis Rivalry and Britpop Legacy
Last year, amid Oasis's highly publicized reunion tour, Albarn conceded that the Manchester band had "won the battle" in their long-standing Britpop rivalry. He acknowledged in July that Oasis were the ultimate winners, claiming their tour had firmly placed them back at the top of the music scene.
"Well, it was obvious, wasn't it?" he said. "I think we can officially say that Oasis won the battle, the war, the campaign, everything. They are the winners. They take first place. In the face of such overwhelming evidence, I am happy to accept and concede defeat."
Gorillaz Tour and Band Name Origins
Now focusing on Gorillaz, Albarn is looking forward to the band's upcoming gigs. Interestingly, fans are only now realizing the pun in the group's name nearly three decades after its creation. The virtual band, formed by Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, features four fictional members: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Russel Hobbs, and Noodle.
One Reddit user recently noted, "The name of the band Gorillaz is a pun because a group of gorillas is called a band." Another theory suggests the name originated from a comment made by Oasis's Liam Gallagher during the height of the Britpop rivalry.
According to this theory, when an interviewer compared the Blur-Oasis feud to the battle between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Gallagher responded, "We're the Beatles and the Stones, and [Blur are] the f***ing Monkees." Albarn apparently named his next group Gorillaz to poke fun at this insult.
