Doctors confirmed Betsy had suffered a stroke, followed by a second stroke after appearing to stabilise. The strokes were caused by a blood clot from neck artery damage due to temporary loss of circulation. Betsy later revealed her boyfriend Dylan Wilson had strangled her during consensual sex, causing the damage. Tests confirmed the stroke resulted in aphasia and dysarthria.

In scenes aired on July 18, Betsy was devastated to learn her mother reported Dylan to police, leading to his arrest. Dylan speculated Betsy cheated with Brody Michaelis and remains unaware that a stroke may not occur immediately after strangulation.
