Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon has said her character Bethany Platt's pregnancy by her mother's ex-boyfriend will not end well, as the fallout unfolds on screen.
The 30-year-old, who has appeared in the ITV soap on and off since 2015, revealed her reaction to the storyline: "My jaw was on the floor." Her character, who has faced storylines involving grooming, bullying, and mental health, is now at the centre of a new dramatic arc.
Pregnancy reveal and consequences
In Tuesday night's episode, viewers learned Bethany is pregnant with the baby of Detective Constable Kit Green, played by Jacob Roberts. Kit is the ex-boyfriend of Bethany's mother, Sarah Platt, played by Tina O'Brien, and their one-night stand occurred while Sarah was in prison.
Fallon said of the revelation: "I think it's so good that now they have got to face the consequences of what they've done and they can't just brush it under the carpet in the way that they wanted to. It's adding a whole other level of drama for the audience."
The actress added that the tryst "just happened," saying: "I don't actually know what she was thinking. I think they both were in quite a bad place at the time."
Bethany's difficult decision
Fallon described her character as feeling "shocked and devastated" by the pregnancy, explaining: "It's not a situation that she wants to be in. She's got to make a decision whether she goes ahead with it or whether she gets a termination – and that's quite traumatic in itself."
Reflecting on the potential repercussions, she said: "I think it's going to eat away at her until one day she can't take it anymore. I think right now it's deny, deny, deny. Coming clean is not an option, especially if she wants to keep a relationship with her mum because she would have the right to never speak to either of them again – the whole family would, it's not even just Sarah. She's stuck in an impossible position right now."
Impact on new romance
Bethany has recently rekindled a romance with Ryan Connor, played by Ryan Prescott, and Fallon called the pregnancy "a massive spanner in the works" for their relationship.
The actress expressed excitement for the drama ahead, saying: "I think any scenes with the Platt family are always the best. I feel like the future drama that could happen now with everyone is exciting. There's so many ways this could go, if and when it all comes out. It's going to be so good and really fun to play."
