Claire Sweeney has admitted she has "no idea" whether her Coronation Street character Cassie Plummer is alive or dead. The 55-year-old actress recently left the ITV soap after three years, but her exit was shrouded in mystery.
Cassie's Troubled Exit
In 2023, Cassie was introduced as the long-lost biological mother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), with Jackie Dobbs (Margi Clarke) revealed to be his adoptive mum. In her final weeks, Cassie's world fell apart when Tyrone's long-lost father Ross appeared and revealed he had paid her for sex when she was underage.
An attempt to spike his drink went wrong, turning her into the villain. Before leaving, she warned daughter-in-law Fiz about Ross and claimed she had a job on a cruise ship. In a strange twist, Ross persuaded her to let him give her a lift, and in her final scene, the car sped off. Ross later returned alone, stealing a photo of her grandchildren.
Claire's Revelation
Claire, who originally found fame on Brookside, left to star as Miss Hannigan in the UK tour of Annie. Speaking on the Conversation Street podcast, she revealed that fans at the stage door asked about Cassie's fate, but she admitted she doesn't know.
She said: "I come out the stage door last night and there was some people who watch Corrie there. And they said, 'So what happens? What happens after that?' And I said, 'I don't actually know...' So I don't know whether I live or die. The scene I've filmed, I don't die, but who knows? When I put the telly on a week or two later, I don't know. It's in the hands of the writers now."
Possible Return
Claire, who has also appeared in musicals like 9 to 5, Legally Blonde, and Chicago, said she would be happy to return if the writers keep Cassie alive. She added: "In musical theatre, [my other dream role] has always been Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers. It's always been that. I've not done that one yet. I can't complain with Corrie. The stuff they gave me. It'd be lovely at some point to make a return."
Fan Reactions
When Cassie's final scenes aired, fans took to social media, worried she might be dead. One fan wrote on X: "Oh s*** is Cassie dead???" Another said: "Cassie getting in the car with Ross, they’re gonna leave us hanging for months over what he’s done to her, I bet!" A third added: "I well like Cassie I’ll be sad if she never comes back." On Reddit, a fan speculated: "Feel like he’s deffo killed her. But think they’ve done it this way so that they can bring her back again if they wanted to."
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
