David Copperfield Concludes Historic Las Vegas Residency After 25 Years
Legendary illusionist David Copperfield is set to conclude his monumental 25-year residency at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with his final performance scheduled for April 30. This announcement arrives mere weeks after Copperfield's name surfaced once again in the latest batch of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, adding a layer of controversy to the end of an era in entertainment.
A Quarter-Century of Magic Draws to a Close
Mike Neubecker, President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM Grand, expressed profound gratitude for Copperfield's longstanding contribution. "We thank David and his exceptional team for the incredible energy they've consistently delivered with this larger-than-life production," Neubecker stated. "David has fascinated audiences at MGM Grand for more than 25 years, and we wish him every success as he embarks on the next chapter of his journey."
In a personal statement shared across his social media platforms, the 69-year-old magician reflected on his lifelong passion for illusion. "My journey began as a kid in New Jersey with a dream of making magic in my life," Copperfield wrote. "I saw magic then — and I see magic now — as more than just my work. Magic teaches us that often things that others dismiss as impossible are not only possible, but within our grasp."
Copperfield further hinted at ambitious future plans, teasing, "I'm excited to announce what's next soon thereafter. It's the largest project I've ever tackled, and the most challenging, too." Over the next eight weeks, he will perform 120 additional shows in the 740-seat theater that bears his name, established in 2013. All ticket holders for performances beyond April 30 will receive automatic refunds.
Epstein Files and Legal Controversies Loom Large
The residency's conclusion coincides with renewed scrutiny following the release of Epstein-related documents by the U.S. Justice Department. FBI detectives noted in the files that Copperfield maintained a "very close relationship" with Epstein, including an email chain where Epstein claimed Copperfield "got engaged to Claudia Schiffer on my island." Copperfield's engagement to the German model occurred in January 1994.
Copperfield has consistently denied any friendship with Epstein. His legal representatives asserted in 2024, "Our client did not know about Epstein's horrific crimes. Like the rest of the world, he learned about it from the press."
Beyond the Epstein associations, Copperfield faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades. These include:
- A 2007 federal investigation that concluded without charges.
- A 2018 accusation related to an incident alleged to have occurred in 1988.
- A May 2024 Guardian investigation reporting allegations from 16 women accusing Copperfield of sexual misconduct and inappropriate behavior between the late 1980s and 2014.
Copperfield's representatives have vehemently denied all allegations, stating, "Everyone that knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent allegations from one newspaper are the exact opposite of who David is." They added that Copperfield would consult his legal team regarding "these false and scurrilous allegations."
Additional Legal and Property Disputes
Further complicating Copperfield's public image, The Independent revealed in 2024 that he was being sued over his "trashed" $7 million Manhattan penthouse. The condominium board at The Galleria on East 57th Street accused the magician of causing approximately $3 million in damages to his own property and neighboring units.
A representative for Copperfield dismissed the lawsuit as a "simple insurance claim," noting, "The photographs included in the lawsuit don't reflect the current state of the apartment. This is a court matter and will be handled in court."
Throughout his illustrious career, David Copperfield has amassed 11 Guinness World Records, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was knighted by the French government. As his Las Vegas chapter closes, the magician's legacy remains intertwined with both his unparalleled showmanship and the controversies that have shadowed his professional achievements.
