Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo and his partner Noa van der Bij have announced the death of their unborn son, Elijah, during pregnancy. The couple, who already have a son named Samuel, had revealed they were expecting their second child together in May.
Heartbreaking Announcement on Instagram
In a series of Instagram stories on Saturday, Van der Bij shared the devastating news. The statement read: "With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son."
The couple described a poignant moment after the loss: "We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel. There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away."
Support from Fans and Club
Fans and teammates have offered condolences to the couple. Liverpool FC has not issued an official statement, but supporters have expressed sympathy on social media. Gakpo, 27, joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has been a key player for the club.
