Claire Sweeney Confirms Explosive Coronation Street Exit

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has officially confirmed that she has filmed her final scenes as Cassie Plummer, marking the end of her three-year stint on the iconic ITV soap. The 55-year-old actress, best known for her role as Lindsey Corkhill on Channel 4's Brookside, joined the cobbles in 2023 as the long-lost daughter of Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) and mother of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).

A Dramatic Arrival and Redemption Arc

Cassie arrived in Weatherfield battling a drug addiction, but managed to turn her life around after reconnecting with Tyrone and his children. She found work as a carer for Ken Barlow (William Roache), forming an unexpected friendship with the veteran resident. However, when Ken no longer required her services, Cassie resorted to lacing his drinks with drugs to maintain her income. Ken eventually discovered her scheme, but remarkably, the pair remained close friends.

Cassie also developed a rivalry with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), often clashing over family drama, and later entered a relationship with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), much to Tracy's dismay.

Emotional Farewell

Reflecting on her departure, Claire shared her emotional experience with Ireland AM: 'I didn't realise until my last day of filming how I actually felt. My job has always been so transient. With theatre, you do a job, nine months is a long run, or a four-month run, and you love each other for that time, and you move on. Some people stick. It's like a train, isn't it? People get on in your life, and the train moves on.'

She added: 'Corrie, because I've been there three years, you know Alan Halsall has become part of the family. Simon Gregson, Kate Ford, Ellie [Mulvaney], the crew, they've all become like family, and it was hard saying goodbye. It was very, very emotional.'

Explosive Exit Teased

Claire described feeling 'very blessed' and revealed that she has been given 'the most wonderful exit storyline,' which she promises will be 'explosive.' Her departure comes as she prepares to take on the role of Miss Hannigan in the stage tour of Annie, a part she has long desired to play.

A Coronation Street spokesperson previously told Metro: 'We wish Claire every success playing Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on being offered a role she has long wanted to play. Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer, during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield leading up to a great exit storyline.'

Fans can expect Cassie's final scenes to air in the coming weeks, promising dramatic twists and emotional goodbyes.
