Christopher Timothy, best known for playing James Herriot in the original BBC series All Creatures Great and Small (1978–1990), has continued to act in recent years, with guest roles in Casualty and a long-running part in Doctors. He also faced a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2008 but was declared cancer-free by 2013.
From Herriot to EastEnders
After leaving the Yorkshire Dales, Timothy appeared in numerous TV shows including Jackanory, The Bill, Lewis, and Holby City. In 2017, he joined EastEnders as Ted Murray, a role he played until 2019. His storyline saw him move into a flat below the Taylor family, befriend Bernie Taylor, and later lose his wife Joyce. Ted eventually left Walford with new partner Wanda Baptiste.
Recurring Role in Doctors
Timothy also portrayed Brendan McGuire in the BBC daytime drama Doctors from 2002 to 2024, appearing in over 900 episodes. Most recently, he played Alan Gibson in Casualty.
Health Battle
In 2008, Timothy was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He kept the news private, not telling his seven children until he was given the all-clear five years later. Speaking to The Daily Star, he said: "I've had prostate cancer, but I've been clear for five years. There were only one or two people who knew." He chose to go public to encourage other men to get tested.
Return to All Creatures Great and Small
The original series, based on the books by Alf Wight (pen name James Herriot), aired from 1978 to 1990. A revival began in 2020 on Channel 5, starring Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot. The seventh series is currently airing.
