Cheryl's Brother Andrew Tweedy Living in Tent and Begging Outside Supermarket
Cheryl's estranged older brother, Andrew Tweedy, is reportedly living in a tent outside a supermarket and begging for food and drink, according to recent media reports. This comes despite the Girls Aloud singer's multiple attempts to help him overcome his long-standing addiction issues.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Struggles
Andrew Tweedy was reportedly in court last month for being drunk and disorderly outside a Morrisons supermarket in Jarrow, South Tyneside. He allegedly told officers to 'F*** off' and challenged them with 'What you going to do?' after police were called due to him shouting and swearing at customers.
As a result, he received a six-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £113. Despite telling magistrates he was receiving hospital treatment for alcohol abuse and had moved back into the family home in Heaton, Newcastle, he was back living in a tent within weeks, stating he had slept outside the store 'for a long time.'
Cheryl's Attempts to Help and Emotional Toll
Cheryl is thought to have made numerous efforts to assist her brother, including a reported £20,000 offer for a rehab stint that he turned down. In her 2012 autobiography, 'Cheryl: My Story,' she opened up about his addiction problems and how his imprisonment for stabbing someone at age 15 impacted her childhood.
An insider revealed that Cheryl was 'knocked sideways' by news of her brother's homelessness and feels torn with guilt. 'She'll always carry around those guilty feelings about Andrew,' the source said. 'No matter what anyone says about his addiction, she'll always wonder if things would have worked if she had tried harder.'
Andrew's History and Current Situation
Andrew has struggled with addiction throughout his life, spending multiple stints in prison. In 2021, it was reported he was living on the streets with a friend and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Razor. He has been to rehab three times but has since vowed he's 'not going back,' admitting, 'I am one of those people that take one step forward and ten steps back. Every time.'
Despite his estrangement from the family, Andrew said of Cheryl, 'Even though Cheryl's not helping me, she's still my family. She probably won't even know I'm on the streets. I don't blame her at all. This is the lowest I've ever been.'
Cheryl, now focusing on her own life, has been described by sources as having her own issues stemming from her traumatic upbringing with her brother. The singer has reportedly done all she can to help, but Andrew continues to battle his demons while living in destitution.
