Timothée Chalamet was seen cheering on France as they lost the World Cup semi-final against Spain on Tuesday night. The 30-year-old actor, who hails from New York but has both French and American heritage, tried to keep a low profile in a pair of dark sunglasses but didn't go unnoticed by eagle-eyed fans.
Chalamet's World Cup Appearance
The Dune star, who is dating 28-year-old beauty mogul Kylie Jenner, donned a French football kit as he supported his native team alongside his dad Marc in Dallas. At one point he appeared on the big screen as the cameras picked up he was there and gave a little smile to the crowds.
Former England captain David Beckham and his son, Romeo Beckham, were also seen chatting to the Oscar-nominee during a hydration break in the nail-biting game. But some fans were less interested in the actual football and more in the fact that Chalamet was in the stadium. One wrote on X: "The biggest cheer I've let out the entire world cup has been seeing Timothée Chalamet in the stands during France and Spain." Another made a joke at the fact France had lost 2-0, penning: "Timothee chalamet losing both the Oscar and the world cup."
Oscar Snub and Controversy
It comes after the actor was brutally snubbed at this year's Oscars back in March as well as being mocked by host Conan O'Brien over his recent "opera and ballet" controversy, before losing out to Michael B. Jordan in the Best Actor category. The performer made the controversial comments during a Variety and CNN town hall event with actor Matthew McConaughey in February at the University of Texas at Austin.
Conan's joke began, "Security has been stepped up at the Oscars," referring to the ramped-up security efforts outside of the Dolby Theatre amid reports that California could be targeted by Iranian drone strikes. He continued: "I'm told there's going to be attacks from both the opera and ballet community," taking aim at the actor's viral blunder. The camera then panned over to a red-faced Timothée, sitting beside Kylie, as the audience erupted in laughter.
"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera," Timothée said at the time. "Things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore'. All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. Damn, I just took shots for no reason." The comments landed the Dune star in hot water, leading to major backlash online and off.
Spain's World Cup Run
Spain's victory is the first time they have reached this far in the World Cup since they lifted the trophy in 2010. If England beat Argentina in tomorrow's night game that kicks off at 8pm, the pair will meet in Sunday's World Cup final, which will air from 8pm.
