A cat named Blue Wilbur has left its owners and veterinarians puzzled after its fur changed from a blue-grey hue to white over several months. The feline, a British Shorthair cross, was adopted by the Taylor family in Manchester two years ago with a distinct blue-grey coat, but by early 2026, it had turned almost entirely white.
Sudden transformation
Owner Sarah Taylor, 34, first noticed the change in December 2025, when patches of white fur appeared on Blue Wilbur's back. Within six months, the transformation was complete. Taylor said: “We thought it was dirt at first, but when we washed him, the white patches remained. It's been a real puzzle.”
Veterinarian Dr. James Carter of the Manchester Animal Clinic examined Blue Wilbur and ruled out common causes such as skin infections or parasites. He noted that the cat's skin remained healthy and that there were no signs of stress or illness.
Possible explanations
Dr. Carter suggested that the colour change could be due to a rare genetic condition called progressive greying, which is sometimes seen in Siamese and Himalayan cats, but is unusual in British Shorthairs. Another possibility is a dietary deficiency affecting melanin production, though Blue Wilbur's diet has remained consistent. “We've seen cases of coat colour changes in cats before, but nothing this dramatic in such a short time,” Carter said.
The cat's diet consists of high-quality commercial cat food, and blood tests have shown no abnormalities. Taylor added: “He's happy and healthy, so we're not too worried, but we're curious to know why it happened.”
Expert opinions
Feline genetics expert Professor Lucy Harper from the University of Edinburgh commented that the phenomenon is “exceptionally rare” and could be linked to a mutation in the tyrosinase gene, which affects melanin production. She noted that similar cases have been documented in a handful of cats worldwide, often in older animals, but Blue Wilbur is only three years old.
Harper said: “We would need to do genetic testing to confirm the cause, but it's a fascinating case that could provide insights into feline coat colour genetics.”
Public interest
The story of Blue Wilbur has captured public attention, with the Taylors receiving messages from cat lovers around the world. A Facebook group dedicated to the cat has gained over 10,000 followers in a week. Taylor said: “We never expected this. He's just a normal cat who likes to sleep and eat, but now he's famous.”
Blue Wilbur's transformation remains a mystery, but his owners are simply happy that he remains in good health. They plan to consult with specialists to explore the cause further.
