Candace Cameron Bure, the 49-year-old actress best known for her role in Full House, has publicly addressed the numerous feuds and backlash she has faced throughout her career, sharing her unique approach to handling online criticism and public disputes.
Navigating Public Controversies
During a recent appearance on Madison Prewett's Stay True podcast, Bure opened up about the multiple public clashes she's been involved with over the years. These have included high-profile disagreements with fellow celebrities including JoJo Siwa, Hilarie Burton, Raven-Symoné, and Scheana Shay, often stemming from her outspoken conservative Christian views.
"But it's just, like, weird. It's weird," Candace commented about the negativity she sometimes encounters online. When asked how she handles such situations, she revealed her strategy: "How do I handle them? I usually don't fight back in the comments, because nothing really comes from it."
The actress explained her reasoning further, stating: "I feel like when you fight back in the comments, it becomes defensive. I feel like the more people defend themselves, the less integrity it holds."
Faith and Fan Support
Rather than engaging directly with critics, Bure shared that she typically avoids personal involvement but appreciates when her supporters come to her defense. "I let God fight my battles a lot online. I also let the other people who are genuine fans fight my battles for me too," she revealed.
"Because sometimes they come in, they're like, 'She doesn't do that. That's not what she meant by that.'" She emphasized the importance of self-control in these situations, adding: "It just takes that self control, that you're like, 'God, I just have to let that go because I'm not gonna please everybody, and just help me walk my walk that is honoring and pleasing to you as best as I can.'"
Notable Feuds and Their Origins
The actress's conflicts with other celebrities have drawn significant media attention over the years. Her feud with JoJo Siwa began in July 2022 when the Dance Moms star posted a TikTok video labelling Candace as the "rudest celebrity" she'd ever met.
Siwa recalled an incident from when she was eleven years old, attending a red carpet event with Full House cast members. She claimed that when she asked Bure for a photo, the actress responded with "not right now" and never returned to take the picture, despite moving on to pose with others.
After the TikTok went viral, Bure personally called Siwa to apologise and issued her own video statement, admitting that hearing JoJo's story "broke her heart." However, tensions resurfaced later when Candace expressed that "traditional marriage" would be the core focus of her Great American Family channel, rather than LGBT content. This disappointed Siwa, who previously identified as lesbian before coming out as queer.
In 2023, Siwa admitted on the Viall Files podcast that she felt "okay" with having labelled Candace as rude, stating: "After that, it gave me a little sense of, 'Okay, you and her are never going to agree.'"
Another significant conflict occurred with One Tree Hill alum Hilarie Burton in 2022, when Burton blasted Bure as a "bigot" over her Great American Family channel remarks. Burton tweeted: "Bigot. I don't remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. But sure. Make your money, honey. You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank."
In subsequent tweets, Burton called Bure "disgusting" and criticised Great American Media's chief executive Bill Abbott, writing: "Now they're just openly admitting their bigotry. Being LGBTQ isn't a 'trend.' That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same-sex couples."
Two days later, Cameron Bure appeared to respond via an Instagram video, referencing "those who hate what I value and who are attacking me online" and "those who have tried to assassinate my character," though she didn't mention Burton by name.
Additional conflicts include a 2015 disagreement with Raven-Symoné over an Oregon bakery that declined to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, with Bure defending the bakers' religious freedom while Raven-Symoné criticised the discrimination.
More recently, in 2024, reality TV star Scheana Shay described Bure as "rude" and "dismissive" after a negative encounter about a decade earlier, while Candace's criticism of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony for featuring a drag performance recreating The Last Supper appeared to spark tension with her former Full House co-star Jodie Sweetin.
In April 2025, Sweetin addressed the rumoured feud on The Vault podcast, insisting her social media post about the Olympics controversy wasn't aimed at Candace but maintaining: "I'm not changing anything I said. But it was not an intentional dig. But it was still what I wanted to say."
