Callum Turner, the actor who has been heavily linked to the role of James Bond, has described the ongoing speculation as 'amusing' while carefully avoiding any confirmation. The 36-year-old star, who recently married pop sensation Dua Lipa in a lavish ceremony in Palermo, Italy, is considered a frontrunner to replace Daniel Craig as the iconic British spy.
Turner's Reaction to Bond Rumours
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Turner was asked about the persistent rumours. 'I know as much as you do – really, I know as much as you do,' he said, skirting the question. When pressed on whether he would accept the role if offered, he laughed and looked at his shoes, adding, 'I am not going to comment on that.' Despite his evasiveness, Turner offered insight into how the speculation affects him. 'Even your best friends ask you, people text you that you haven't spoken to for 10 years – and you know nothing! It is such a weird thing of something happening and nothing happening at all. I genuinely know nothing. I just find it quite amusing.'
George Clooney's Endorsement
While Turner remains tight-lipped, Hollywood legend George Clooney has voiced his support. Clooney, who directed Turner in the 2023 drama film The Boys in the Boat, called him a 'great' choice for James Bond. 'He is tall and handsome and charming and British, so he is the perfect guy to do it,' Clooney said.
Other Contenders and Franchise Status
Turner is among a long list of actors rumored for the role, including Jacob Elordi and Harris Dickinson. However, Amazon, which now holds creative control over the franchise after longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson stepped down, has remained silent. The next Bond film is expected to be written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune. According to a source, the film is unlikely to be released before 2028. 'Bond won't be back until 2028,' the source told The Sun. 'The production mindset's gone from "Let's hurry this through" to "Make sure we get this right."'
Daniel Craig, who played Bond from 2006's Casino Royale to 2021's No Time to Die, has not been replaced. Meanwhile, Sir Idris Elba, a longtime fan favorite, recently dismissed his own Bond rumors as 'not realistic,' suggesting that some audiences may not accept a black Bond.
As fans eagerly await the next installment, Turner's wedding to Dua Lipa and his rising profile keep him in the spotlight. Whether he will ultimately don the tuxedo remains uncertain, but the speculation shows no signs of fading.
