After an absence of nearly four years, BTS has launched their 10th studio album Arirang and an 85-date global tour, dubbed the "comeback of the century" by fans. The album debuted at No1 on the UK album chart, while lead single Swim peaked at No2, the band's best-performing song in Britain to date. The tour arrives at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Monday, 6 July 2026.
Record-Breaking Album Sales and Streaming
Released in March 2026, Arirang became BTS's fastest-selling album, shifting nearly 4 million copies in 24 hours – the highest first-day sales for any K-pop act. It also became the most-streamed K-pop album on Spotify and earned the group a seventh US No1. The album blends Korean folk with experimental sounds, reflecting a newfound maturity after the band's mandatory military service.
Carl Smith, Editor of Official Charts, told OK! magazine: "It's clear that BTS's success is no longer just fan-powered, it's mainstream. With years of pent-up demand and reunion speculation, BTS's return has been a real comeback for the ages."
Military Service and Reunion
BTS announced a hiatus in June 2022 to fulfill South Korea's mandatory military service and pursue solo projects. Frontman RM explained the band wanted "time to think about what kind of group we want to be." Suga was the final member to complete his service in June 2025, and days later the group confirmed their return via a livestream, declaring, "Hey guys, we are back."
The members were "deeply involved" in creating the 14 new songs on Arirang, which express "the emotions and struggles they have experienced along their journey," according to a statement from their label Big Hit Music. Handwritten letters to the Army (BTS's fanbase) described 2026 as "the year we finally meet again."
Global Phenomenon and Cultural Impact
Since debuting in 2013, BTS has transcended Asian music markets, becoming the fastest group since the Beatles to achieve four US No1 albums in less than two years (by 2020). They have been credited with leading the "Korean wave," boosting global interest in K-pop and Korean culture, including Netflix hits like Squid Game and KPop Demon Hunters.
Euny Hong, author of The Birth of Korean Cool, noted: "The way Swim broke records was honestly surprising. Between 2022 and 2026, the Army fanbase seemed to become even more prevalent, despite the band being on hiatus."
Comeback Concert and World Tour
BTS delivered their first full-group live performance in nearly four years at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, drawing over 100,000 fans. The concert was streamed live on Netflix in 190 countries as BTS The Comeback Live, attracting 18.4 million viewers worldwide on 21 March 2026.
The World Tour Arirang kicked off two weeks later at Goyang Stadium, where torrential rain did not dampen spirits. V joked about doing the breaststroke as puddles formed on stage, while Suga likened the venue to "a water park." The tour is expected to gross $1 billion, with London's show featuring ambitious pyrotechnics and thousands of LED lights.
Euny Hong commented: "The staging in the comeback shows so far with all the confetti and fireworks has been like a heroes' welcome or a military parade. With BTS, it's no longer just a simple concert. It's a celebration of survival – both literally and as a band."
Netflix Documentary and Behind-the-Scenes
The Netflix documentary BTS: The Return, released in March 2026, offers an intimate look at the making of Arirang and the members' personal feelings about regrouping. J-Hope described studio sessions as "like a factory," while Jimin expressed fears they were "rushing" after the long hiatus. The documentary also shows their military experiences, from heading to bases to being discharged.
Songwriter and producer Marcus McCoan, who worked on BTS tracks including Jamais Vu and Mikrokosmos, said: "The Netflix doc just further proves their mission to be unapologetically authentic. Anyone who's willing to do a documentary with that level of exposure is not just in it for the music, it's way more than that."
Future Prospects
With 2026 already a landmark year, BTS shows no signs of slowing down. Marcus McCoan added: "They were already the kings of K-pop, but while they've been away the industry has grown and they've come back to take over again. It's amazing, because they've just got that power and everything they do turns to gold."
