Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has died at the age of 59. The Press Trust of India announced the news, and fellow director Milap Zaveri confirmed it, noting, "It is true that he passed away. He fell and hit his head."
Death at Mumbai residence
According to PTI, Gupta died on Friday (30 October) after slipping in the kitchen of his Mumbai residence. The Free Press Journal reported that Versova police had initiated an accidental death inquiry.
Purushottam Karad, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone Region I, said, "Gupta was living in the bungalow with his wife, two children and a domestic help. All the family members were asleep at the time of the incident and came to know about it only in the morning." He added, "The family has not raised any suspicion or lodged a complaint."
Tributes from Bollywood
Following the news, tributes poured in for the late director across social media. One fan tweeted, "RIP Sanjay Gupta, and thanks for the memories." Another wrote, "Sanjay Gupta! Gone too early. Bollywood will feel your absence."
A third comment read, "Bollywood lost a true visionary. Sanjay Gupta didn't just make movies; he created an entire aesthetic of style, grit, and adrenaline that defined an era of Hindi cinema. From iconic multi-starrers to raw gangster epics, his distinct signature on the silver screen will live forever."
Colleagues remember Gupta
Harshvardhan Rane, who worked with Gupta on The Miranda Brothers, responded on Instagram: "I can't imagine what Anu maam and the kids must be going through. He was all about loving his family and making films non-stop. When we shot The Miranda Brothers, he took me and Meezaan out to eat in Goa all the time; I had never met a more happy man on and off set."
Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan said, "Sanjay, I'm gonna miss you, man. One film with you wasn't enough ... I will always remember our time together with so much love for you... Your laughter, your passion, that child in you that lit up with every good idea- there was so much more we needed to do together, man. This is way too soon."
He continued, "I'm gonna remember you with so much gratitude, my friend. I wish I had hugged you harder and thanked you for giving me the best experience of my life with Kaabil. Nobody will fully know how much you gave to that film. I'm heartbroken; this was too soon."
