Blackpool Tower to Honour Murdered Toddler Preston Davey

Blackpool Tower will be illuminated in blue on July 27 to honour murdered toddler Preston Davey, almost three years after his death, following a heartbreaking request from his birth mother, Sarah Davey. A spokesperson for Blackpool Tourism confirmed the tribute to LancsLive, stating: "I can confirm that the Tower will be lit in blue on Monday 27 July." A vigil is also being planned to remember Preston, who was just 13 months old when he was killed by his adoptive father, Jamie Varley.

Details of the Abuse and Trial

At the time of Preston's death, Varley and his then partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, were in the process of formally adopting the little boy after he had been placed with them as prospective adopters in March 2023. A trial at Preston Crown Court, lasting more than seven weeks, heard that Preston suffered extensive physical, emotional and sexual abuse while living with the couple. A post-mortem examination found the toddler had sustained around 40 separate injuries.

Prosecutors described the case as one of the most shocking they had ever encountered, telling the court Preston endured a sustained campaign of abuse during the final months of his life. Varley was ultimately convicted of murder, sexual offences, causing grievous bodily harm, cruelty and indecent image offences. He was handed a whole-life order. McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child, cruelty and sexual assault. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Property Put on the Market

The planned tribute comes just days after LancsLive revealed that the home Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley moved into only 22 days after Preston's death has been placed on the market. The semi-detached property on Staining Road in Blackpool is due to be sold at an online auction ending on July 31. Its sales listing describes it as an "immaculate detached property with stunning countryside views" and says it represents "an ideal opportunity for families."

The listing also includes a warning for prospective buyers, stating: "The vendor is currently serving a custodial sentence following conviction for offences involving [a minor]. It is understood that the offences were not committed at the property. This information is being provided in the interests of transparency and to assist prospective purchasers in making an informed decision. Buyers should undertake their own enquiries and satisfy themselves as to any matters that may influence their decision to bid for or purchase the property."
