Derek Hough, the professional dancer and judge on 'Dancing with the Stars', has been named the new host of the syndicated entertainment news programme 'Extra'. He replaces Billy Bush, who announced his departure earlier this year after five years with the Telepictures-produced series.
Hough will join for the show's 32nd season, which launches on 8 September. The season will feature a 'freshly reimagined' format, including new segments built around Hough, original digital content, and a dynamic new set and graphics. He will conduct exclusive celebrity interviews and offer behind-the-scenes access to his projects, including 'Dancing with the Stars'.
Hough will be joined by senior correspondent and weekend host Mona Kosar Abdi and correspondent Terri Seymour. Executive producer Jeremy Spiegel, now the sole showrunner after Theresa Coffino's departure, said in a statement: 'Derek has not only dominated the world of dance — he's become a beloved household name... I am excited to work closely with Derek as he brings his electrifying energy and fresh perspective to “Extra.”'
Hough is a four-time Emmy winner and a New York Times bestselling author. He has appeared in the film 'Make Your Move', had recurring roles on 'Nashville' and 'High School Musical: The Musical', and starred in 'Hairspray Live!'. He is entering his sixth year as a judge on 'Dancing with the Stars', having previously won the competition six times as a professional dancer.
'Extra' has received 12 consecutive Daytime Emmy nominations for outstanding entertainment news programme, winning in 2014 and 2016. The show has been renewed in over 95% of the US market, including by Fox Television Stations, Nexstar Media Group, and Sinclair Broadcast Group, among others.
