Anna Richardson Announces Death of Father Jim After Dementia Battle
Anna Richardson's Dad Dies After Dementia Fight

TV presenter Anna Richardson has announced the death of her father, Jim, following a nearly decade-long battle with dementia. Jim passed away on June 25, two weeks after being admitted to hospital with heart failure, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung.

Final Days in Hospital

Anna, 55, revealed that she and one of her brothers "set up camp" beside their father during his final two weeks in hospital. She likened them to "two gargoyles guarding the entrance of a church" as they watched over him. Jim, a former Church of England canon, had been battling dementia for almost ten years.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Anna shared a series of images with her father, including photos from his hospital stay. She wrote: "Death is strange. We spend our lives trying not to talk about it, until one day, it's the only thing in the room."

A Father's Will to Live

Anna described her father's astonishing will to live despite his failing body. She fed him grapes and tinned peaches, hoping that if he got out of bed, the family could have "another few weeks together." However, when Jim's heart became "too weak," Anna and her brother decided to spend all their time at the hospital with him.

"He took his last breath on June 25th - my mother's Birthday," Anna said, noting the strange timing of his passing.

Remembering a Remarkable Life

Anna reflected on her father's extraordinary life: "A working class lad from south east London, who knew he had a calling. He travelled the world, worked closely with every faith, met the Pope, received his OBE from Queen Elizabeth, all while ministering to his congregation in the Church of England."

Jim's last great adventure was making the Channel 4 documentary Love, Loss & Dementia with Anna. She described him as "fun-loving, private, difficult, thoughtful, and oh-so complex - but he was my Dad. And I loved him."

Outpouring of Support

Anna's post was flooded with messages of condolence and support. Ruth Langsford wrote: "I'm so very sorry Anna. Grief is the price we pay for love and you clearly loved your Dad so much." Andrea McLean added: "Oh Anna. I'm so sorry to hear this. Sending you all my love." Gok Wan typed: "Sending you so much love my darling."

The Alzheimer's Society said: "We're so sorry to hear this sad news, Anna. Jim was fantastic in Love, Loss and Dementia." Gaby Roslin and Sue Perkins also offered their condolences.

Anna has been vocal about her father's dementia over the years, raising awareness of the condition and the need for more support for those affected.
