Actress Anna Dawson, who played Violet Bucket in the classic British sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 88. Her death was announced by members of her church, Christ Church Anglican at Kororāreka Russell in New Zealand, in a Facebook post. The post stated that Dawson, also known as Anna Boulter, died peacefully on Saturday, just six months after the passing of her husband, John Boulter.
Career Highlights
Dawson began her screen career in 1964 with a role in Dixon of Dock Green, followed by appearances in Slapstick and Old Lace and Mother Goose. She rose to prominence in the 1970s on the Benny Hill Show and the Morecambe and Wise Show, and later appeared on game shows Blankety Blank and Give Us a Clue.
Role in Keeping Up Appearances
Dawson captivated audiences in the mid-1990s as Violet, the sister of Hyacinth Bucket (played by Dame Patricia Routledge). Hyacinth famously described Violet as 'the one with the Mercedes, sauna and room for a pony.' Despite appearing in only four credited episodes, Dawson shone alongside Routledge, Clive Swift, Geoffery Hughes, and Josephine Tewson. Violet was Dawson's last acting role before she retired and moved to New Zealand with her husband.
Co-Star's Passing
The news comes months after the death of her co-star Dame Patricia Routledge, who died in October at age 96. Routledge's agent confirmed she 'died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by love,' adding that her passion for work and connecting with audiences never waned.
Anna Dawson is survived by her late husband John Boulter, who predeceased her by six months. Funeral details are to be announced.
