BBC Countryfile presenter Anita Rani had to be carried by a guest during Sunday's episode after she admitted to breaking a rule by forgetting her wellies. The incident occurred as the tide rose rapidly while she was filming on an oyster reef in Essex.
Oyster Farming on Mersea Island
Anita travelled to West Mersea in Essex, where oysters have been cultivated for over 2,000 years. The area's creeks around Mersea Island are known for oyster farming. During her visit, she ventured onto brackish waters to meet those farming oysters and learned about the impact of the non-native Atlantic rock oyster on the local ecosystem.
Research on Oyster Reefs
Accompanied by ecologist Tom Cameron from the University of Essex and researchers Lola and Kristina, Anita joined a team studying oyster reefs. The group travelled to Brightlingsea to a rock oyster reef, where Anita was eager to participate in the research. However, she soon faced a problem as the tide began to advance.
Forgotten Wellies Lead to Rescue
Anita asked, "Someone keeping an eye on the tide, right?" before confessing, "Doesn't help that I've broken Countryfile Rule 101 and forgotten my wellies." As the water rose, the camera showed her wearing walking boots. A guest then hoisted Anita onto his back and carried her back to the boat. Laughing, Anita quipped, "I know. Demanding."
Archival Segment
Elsewhere in the episode, Anita delved into the Countryfile archives to revisit individuals and initiatives that have shaped life along the coastline. Viewers can catch up on Countryfile on BBC iPlayer.
