Amy Adams has revealed how she saved a stabbing victim's life using techniques she learned while playing a nurse on the short-lived CBS medical drama Dr. Vegas. The 51-year-old Hollywood star, known for roles in Enchanted and Arrival, recounted the incident on the Smartless podcast.
Heroic Intervention in Santa Monica
Adams explained that she and her family had just finished dinner at their favorite restaurant in Santa Monica, California, when they encountered a man who had been stabbed in the neck. “We were the first people on the scene,” she said. “These people were screaming and a guy was walking and they were yelling: ‘He’s dying!’ And my husband’s like: ‘That’s blood!’”
The actress rushed to help, using beach towels to apply pressure to the wound. “He was bleeding and his friends were freaking out,” she recalled. Drawing on her experience from Dr. Vegas, she told the victim, “The more you struggle, the faster you’re going to bleed. Just lie down.”
A Year Later, a Shocking Reunion
Remarkably, Adams ran into the same man at a restaurant a year later. “A guy walks up to me… He’s like, ‘I heard a story that you and your dad were on the scene of a guy getting stabbed,’” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s you.’ And it was him.” Adams described the moment as “crazy” and noted the man was “teary.”
Fans praised the actress on X, with one writing: “Oh wow ... I always wondered if stuff they learn on set would come in handy.... glad she was there to help...” Another added: “Amy Adams out here saving a stabbing victim with lines she learned from a cancelled medical show like the universe decided her acting preparation needed a real world pop quiz.”
The Short-Lived Dr. Vegas
Dr. Vegas aired only five episodes on CBS in 2004 before being cancelled, though all ten produced episodes were eventually released internationally, including in Ireland and the UK. The series also starred Rob Lowe as Dr. Billy Grant, an in-house physician at a Las Vegas hotel-casino. Adams played nurse Alice Doherty in the drama.
Current Projects
Adams is currently starring in Apple TV+'s remake of the 1991 Martin Scorsese thriller Cape Fear. She plays defense attorney Anna Bowden opposite Patrick Wilson as her husband Tom, a fellow prosecutor. The 10-episode series, which is streaming now, follows the couple as they are terrorized by a former client, killer Max Cady (Javier Bardem), after his release from prison.
