The psychological thriller series Mindhunter may have concluded over five years ago, but it has amassed a devoted following, with fans still hoping for its return. Originally released in 2017, the show ended after only two seasons, leaving viewers disappointed.
A True Crime Foundation
Created by David Fincher and starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, Mindhunter is based on the 1995 true crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The series follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, along with psychologist Wendy Carr, as they pioneer criminal profiling in the late 1970s and early 1980s by interviewing incarcerated serial killers.
Acclaim and Recognition
Mindhunter has earned the top spot on TV Line's list of "The 15 Best Detective TV Shows Ever Made, Ranked." It also boasts an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its "ambitiously cinematic visuals and meticulous attention to character development." Fans echo this sentiment, with one stating, "Holy moly, we need a Season 3 or film sequel!!! So good."
Potential Return as Films
In an interview with CBR, Holt McCallany revealed that the show could potentially return as three Netflix films. He shared, "I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but David has to be happy with scripts."
Perhaps 2026 will see the return of this undeservedly cancelled crime thriller. Mindhunter is currently available to stream on Netflix.
