A couple who thought they had adopted a labrador puppy from a rescue shelter got a big surprise as the dog grew older. The pair instantly fell in love with a rescue pup named Buffy after spotting her online listing. With her short light-brown coat, floppy ears, and adorable face, they were certain she would grow into a labrador-type dog.
The Shocking Transformation
Sharing their experience on Instagram via @buffy.the.egg.slayer, the owners posted Buffy's original shelter photo alongside a message revealing what they first thought when they saw her. However, as the weeks passed and Buffy settled into her new home, her appearance began to change dramatically. Her once-floppy ears gradually started to stand upright, with one ear regularly sticking up—a feature not typically associated with labradors. Her distinctive pink nose also became more noticeable as she grew older, making it increasingly clear that she wasn't the breed they had originally imagined.
What the Paperwork Revealed
The caption on the video reads: "Safe to say she wasn't a Lab…" A closer look at her adoption paperwork revealed the shelter may have been trying to tell them all along. Rather than being listed as a labrador, Buffy had been described simply as a "mongrel"—a term commonly used for dogs of mixed or unknown ancestry.
Owners Wouldn't Change a Thing
Despite the surprise transformation, her owners say they wouldn't change a thing. Rather than feeling disappointed, they say Buffy's unusual features and unique appearance have only made her even more lovable. The clip ends with the message: "Wouldn't change a thing."
Social Media Reactions
Commenting on the video, one user said: "He looks like every children's drawing of a dog brought to life." Another added: "He looks so human, it's uncanny almost." A third joked: "That's the most 'dog' looking dog I've ever seen, I think. Doesn't get any doggier than this."
