Zara Tindall on 'special' medal moment with Princess Anne
Zara Tindall on Princess Anne medal moment and family joke

Zara Tindall has recalled the moment her mother, Princess Anne, presented her with an Olympic medal, after making a light-hearted comment about her family. Speaking on the Talk Horse podcast with Pippa Funnell and Tristan Phipps, the royal discussed her career, horses and life in equestrian sport.

Silver at London 2012

Tristan reflected on the significance of Princess Anne presenting the medal, saying: "I can only imagine. Yeah. And then obviously, you know, to get a fantastic result, to get silver and then have your mother present. That's very special."

Zara's response offered a playful take on family support: "Actually, some of my family came to watch for once, which is nice."

Memories of the Games

She described the atmosphere in London as "amazing", noting how athletes could explore the capital and watch other events after competing. The Olympic dining hall stood out, where competitors from different countries and religions gathered before events.

Riding High Kingdom, Zara helped Great Britain win silver in eventing behind Germany, becoming the first British royal to claim an Olympic medal. The team faced a tense finish after Zara knocked down a pole and picked up three time penalties in the showjumping, but clear rounds from Mary King and Tina Cook secured silver. William Fox-Pitt and Nicola Wilson were also part of the team.

Family celebrations

Prince William, Princess Kate and Prince Harry celebrated from the sidelines at Greenwich Park as Tina cleared the final fence to confirm the medal. Princess Anne then presented the medals.

"Of course it was amazing to receive the medal from my mum," Zara said, later joking: "Whatever you do, don't ask me what it was like to have my mother present me with the medal. Obviously it was amazing."

The success followed missed Games in 2004 and 2008 due to injuries to her horse Toytown. On the podcast, Zara also reflected on riding Class Affair and winning the British Open, while she and Pippa recalled their rivalry at Burghley in 2003 before becoming teammates.
