Vogue Williams has responded to a critical comment accusing her of “breaking maternity law” after the birth of her fourth child. The Irish television presenter welcomed son Remy Valentine on September 1, her fourth child with husband Spencer Matthews, and has since resumed commitments including modelling and podcasting.
Comment on podcast episode
In the latest episode of My Therapist Ghosted Me, Williams opened up to co-host Joanne McNally about the disparaging analysis of her as a mother. After lifting up Remy, who had his back to the camera, McNally said: “There’s the baby. Look at the baby. Forgot about him.”
Responding, Williams, 40, said: “Someone left a comment on my and Amber’s pod and they were like ‘a mother should not be out with their baby at all from a month old’ blah blah blah. Like going on this rant about there’s a maternity law.”
Williams' response
She added: “I was like, there’s no maternity law! And then I was like, hang on a second, I’m quite clearly in my bedroom with the baby as well. Anyway, I told her I agreed with her and that women should stay at home for at least one to two years with the baby after giving birth. She deleted the comment.”
McNally replied: “We all know — nobody polices new mothers better than women.”
Last month, Williams posted photographs including of Spencer and their three older children, Theodore, eight, Gigi, six, and Otto, four, meeting the newest addition. She captioned it: “Our beautiful baby boy has arrived safely… The house is bursting with excitement, love and happiness and we couldn’t be more delighted.”
Name change and ChatGPT role
Not long before giving birth, Williams said on the podcast that she and Spencer had planned to call their son Elivs, but inputs from family members discouraged them. She said: “We have changed our baby name — we have no name. Spenny has been getting a few phone calls from family members regarding the name.”
Despite liking the name, Williams acknowledged she was never fully satisfied with it, adding: “I haven’t ever been 100% comfortable with it.” She stated it was “such a big name to take on when you’re little or trying to get a job when you’re older”.
This week she appeared on Heart Radio, where she was asked why she decided on the name. She said: “We liked the name Remy, it was on our list. I was using ChatGPT a lot and I was like, I don’t want everyone to have the name. But only old men in France are called Remy.”
Jamie Theakston then made Williams laugh by asking if he was named after rats like in the Ratatouille film. Although she said she had forgotten about that “great movie”, she added that the name Rocket was considered at one point, but joked that it “must have been the hormones”.
