Vernon Kay shares 'full circle' family moment at Reading Festival
Vernon Kay's 'full circle' family moment at Reading Festival

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has spoken about a 'full circle moment' he experienced while taking his and Tess Daly's daughters, Phoebe and Amber, to the Reading Festival.

During a live broadcast with co-star Ellie Brennan, Kay, 52, recalled his own first festival in the early '90s and the surreal feeling of now dropping his own children off at the same event.

A trip down memory lane

After playing a promotional clip for BBC 6 Music's Indie Forever stream, Kay said: 'Speaking of Reading and Leeds Festival, Indie Forever, oh I had a reminisce. Because we talked about it at the beginning of the week, about the Reading and Leeds Festival in the early '90s - some bands on there!'

Brennan, Radio 2's traffic reporter, shared her own festival story, saying: 'Oh, some of the line-ups have been mega. I met my best mate at uni, she's from Leeds so they go every year, but she'd always go back on the Saturday morning to her mum's house and she got conjunctivitis every year! She'd go, she'd have a few, wash, and then she'd go back. Because it can get messy there!'

Parental perspective

Kay chuckled before adding: 'Ah, fair enough, very good! As a parent, it's one of those full circle moments. It was my first festival, the Reading Festival, back in the very, very early '90s - 1991, 1992, or something like that - and then dropping your kids off...'

Brennan told her colleague: 'Aww! That must be a nice moment,' to which Kay confessed: 'It's weird, it's weird. Because you remember what you got up to, you're like, 'go and enjoy yourself, but not too much'.'

'Also, you know the washing is coming back to you,' Brennan suggested, but Kay was quick to insist: 'I don't mind that because I like ironing!'

Separation announcement

Kay and former Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly confirmed their decision to separate after 22 years of marriage in May. In a statement announcing the news, the TV stars said they 'remain great friends and most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority'.
