BBC Radio 2 presenter Trevor Nelson is returning to the station after undergoing successful surgery to remove a brain tumour. The 62-year-old confirmed on Friday (September 4) that he will host his Radio 2 show from Monday (September 7).
Nelson stepped back from the radio in June after revealing his diagnosis. During his absence, DJ Spoony covered his slot on the airwaves while Nelson focused on his health and recovery.
Staggered return to work
He will return for his 2pm to 4pm slot at the beginning of the week before rejoining his BBC Radio 1Xtra show on Sunday (September 13) at 11am. The DJ announced: "I will be slowly easing my way back on the airwaves from Monday on Radio 2 and next Sunday on 1Xtra. I look forward to being with you all."
The news was revealed on Sara Cox's Breakfast Show this morning at 8.50am. Nelson quipped: "Oh, hi Sara Cox... Have I missed anything? Now, where were we before I was rudely interrupted?"
He added: "It's been a minute, I know... but over the next few weeks I'm getting back to where I belong... In the Radio 2 studio, behind the microphone and spinning some records! It's so good to be home, and I'd be delighted if you could join me Monday afternoon from 2."
Recovery and reflection
Nelson will make a staggered return to full-time work, working two days next week, three days the week after and four days the following week before returning full-time on Monday, September 28. DJ Spoony, who largely covered for Nelson in his absence, will step in on days he is not in, as will Clara Amfo.
He returned to social media last month to address speculation following his sudden step away from work two months earlier. Trevor expressed: "There's been a lot of speculation as to what's wrong with me, I know that much. My phone's blown up 20 times over with people asking what's wrong with me."
The dad-of-two said he wanted to share more details because of the overwhelming outpouring of love he had received online. However, he said he was not going to do a "deep dive" just yet, but would open up at a later date.
He continued: "I was minding my own business, and then it was discovered I had a brain tumour. As you can imagine, I was shocked. In fact, my world was turned upside down. Quite literally, my head was all over the place.
"I knew I had to stop work because I couldn't be that guy on the radio knowing I had that going on."
After confirming his surgery was a success, Trevor revealed that he has been "recuperating and resting" at home and following his post-op treatment. He went on: "I can only tell you the truth, and the truth is I feel great right now."
Trevor added he was back playing golf and working out in the gym and living his old life, except for the radio and gigs.
