Tommy Cooper's tragic live TV death remembered

On April 15 1984, Welsh comedian Tommy Cooper suffered a fatal heart attack on stage during a live television broadcast, with millions of viewers watching unaware of the tragedy. The 63-year-old, renowned for his fez hat, botched magic tricks, and thunderous catchphrase, was performing on the Live From Her Majesty's show when he collapsed midway through his signature cloak sketch.

Audience Laughs as Cooper Collapses

The evening's host, Jimmy Tarbuck, was behind the curtain passing props for the routine and initially presumed the fall was part of the act. The audience continued laughing for several minutes, even as Cooper stopped moving. Tarbuck and the crew soon realised something was wrong, and the broadcast cut to a break as producers rushed to help.

Show Continues Behind the Curtain

The crew moved Cooper's 6ft 3in body behind the curtain, but the show remained live. The next act, Les Dennis and Dustin Gee, performed in the confined area, unaware of the severity of events. Singer Howard Keel later told Tarbuck he would sing "up the f****** aisle" to give the crew more space.

Death and Legacy

Cooper was taken to Westminster Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The news was not made public until the following day. Reflecting years later, Tarbuck recalled telling producer David Bell, "this isn't it [part of the act]", and insisting, "I'm going on David, this is live."

Friend and actress Sheila Hancock said: "I think the way he died was perfect, really. I think he was happy on the stage. So he died in his happy place." In the years before his death, Cooper struggled with alcohol dependency, which he blamed on stage fright, and persistent smoking that led to chronic bronchitis and circulatory complications.

In 2005, fellow comedians ranked him the sixth greatest comedy act of all time, and a statue was unveiled in his hometown of Caerphilly in 2008 by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
