Jonny Hayes has revealed the unseen furious reaction of Celtic ambassador Tom Boyd after the Hoops were thumped 7-1 by Rangers in the Tennent's Sixes group stage.
Speaking to the Scottish Football Social Club, the former Parkhead winger said Boyd launched a ferocious tirade at the Celtic icons of yesteryear - just 24 hours before the team went on to beat their rivals and lift the trophy.
Boyd's dressing-room tirade
Hayes described how the team sat in silence after the heavy defeat to Barry Ferguson's Light Blues on Saturday, before Boyd let rip.
“Obviously Tam was raging. We were all sitting in silence. I will be honest, we were embarrassed. We were sitting there in the back room, walking about…nobody said a word to anybody,” Hayes said.
“So, Tam has come in and had a pop at us. I feel like I’m in school - like it’s Terry Butcher having a go at me again. So, Tam has a proper pop, and it’s more like ‘I’m disappointed more than angry’. Nobody said anything.”
Mulgrew breaks the ice
Hayes then explained how Charlie Mulgrew defused the tense atmosphere with a light-hearted comment.
Hayes said: “Then Charlie said ‘I’m not employed by the club, he can’t shout at me like that’ - and that just broke the ice.”
“We had a laugh, but at the same time Aiden - you could see Aiden is competitive. I don’t think Aiden spoke to anybody for about half an hour after that game. Even when you start talking you could see he was seething.”
Hayes misses celebrations
While Hayes endured the tirade, he missed out on the post-trophy celebrations after the victory over Rangers due to injury.
He revealed: “I missed out on the celebrations, I had to go to A&E. All of the staff who were there (at the tournament) recommended I should get an X-ray.
“I was dying to get home but I went up to A&E and they found a small crack on my foot.
“It was 2-1 at half-time and I was just itching to get back on. I took a couple of steps and it didn’t feel right but we scored pretty much right away and then I thought I’ll just see it through.”
