A couple who confessed to eating two milk chocolate bars each every single night received a stark warning from medical experts Tim Spector and Dr. Kandi Ejiofor. The advice came during a Channel 4 programme called What Not to Eat, which followed Vicki and Rob as they addressed their poor diet.
The Problem with Milk Chocolate
The duo admitted their diet consisted largely of chocolate, brownies, instant noodles, and other high-fat, high-sugar foods. Professor Tim Spector, an epidemiologist and founder of Zoe, explained that if they wanted to continue enjoying chocolate while avoiding excessive sugar, they needed to make a straightforward switch to dark chocolate. He noted that milk chocolate is ultra-processed, with only about 25% cocoa solids and a staggering amount of sugar.
Dr. Kandi Ejiofor, a GP and clinical lead specializing in lifestyle medicine, revealed to the pair that eating milk chocolate means consuming at least 100 grams of pure sugar. The couple looked shocked, admitting the thought of their sugar intake made them feel sick.
Why We Crave Chocolate
Professor Spector explained that like many ultra-processed foods, milk chocolate is formulated to be hyperpalatable. The perfect combination of fats and sugars triggers the reward center in the brain, tempting people to eat more. However, not all chocolate is created equal: the more cocoa, the less sugar.
The Dark Chocolate Solution
The experts suggested swapping milk chocolate for dark chocolate. Spector revealed that if they consumed a 90% dark chocolate bar, they would need 31 bars to get the same amount of sugar as a single bar of milk chocolate. Vicki described this fact as shocking.
Dr. Ejiofor highlighted the benefits of dark chocolate, including anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and essential minerals. Tim added that the plan was to transition the couple from sugary ultra-processed chocolate to healthier options.
Trying Dark Chocolate
The couple sampled 80% dark chocolate, which they said they could get used to, but found 90% very bitter. Nonetheless, they committed to the change.
Six-Week Transformation
Six weeks later, Professor Spector reported that the dietary change had entirely transformed the couple. Rob lost nearly a stone in weight, and Vicki lost a quarter of a stone. Their initially worrying levels of inflammation had significantly decreased.
Rob shared: "Since day one on the dot, we have not had a single piece of that chocolate in the house at all. I went straight to 90." Tim joked that this was "hardcore." Rob added that they tried 80% chocolate recently and found it tasted really sweet. For others wanting to make a similar change, Spector suggested that 80% dark chocolate can be a sweet spot, still feeling like a treat.
