The Tennent's Sixes tournament is set to return after a 23-year absence, with the SPFL filling the domestic football void during an extended international break. The six-a-side event, which originally featured current players from Scottish teams and guest English clubs, will now be strictly for retired players.
Tournament returns at Braehead Arena
The comeback is scheduled for the weekend of October 3 and 4 at Braehead Arena, coinciding with Sebastien Pocognoli's first games as Scotland boss in the Nations League. The tournament will feature the current 12 top flight clubs, meaning holders Partick Thistle will not defend their title more than two decades on.
The clubs have been split into three regionalised groups of four, with the top two from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, progressing to the knockout rounds.
Confirmed squads for the tournament
Several clubs have already confirmed their squads. Celtic will be managed by Tom Boyd, with a squad including Charlie Mulgrew, Jonny Hayes, Joe Ledley, Derek Riordan, Aiden McGeady and Gary Hooper. Hearts have named Roddy McKenzie, Don Cowie, Christophe Berra, David Templeton, Ryan Stevenson, Ian Black and Rudi Skácel.
Rangers will be managed by Barry Ferguson, with Lee McCulloch confirmed. Kilmarnock have James Fowler as manager and Garry Hay as assistant manager, with a squad including Craig Bryson, Liam Kelly, Jamie Hamill and Stevie Murray.
St Johnstone have Kevin Cuthbert, Liam Craig, Frazer Wright, Craig Conway, Jody Morris, Cillian Sheridan, Steven Anderson, Gavin Swankie and Peter MacDonald. St Mirren have Hugh Murray as player/manager, with Ludovic Roy, Paul Rudden, Lee Mair, Scott Walker, Barry McLaughlin, Simon Lappin, Mark Corcoran and Jose Quitongo.
Group stage draw
Group A consists of Falkirk, Motherwell, Hibs and Hearts. Group B has St Johnstone, Dundee, Dundee Utd and Aberdeen. Group C features Kilmarnock, Celtic, St Mirren and Rangers.
More squads are expected to be confirmed over the next few weeks as clubs announce which familiar faces will be involved.
