The eclipse will reach maximum coverage across the UK between about 7:05pm and 7:13pm tonight, with slight variations depending on geography. People in the Scilly Isles are set for the best view, with 96% of the Sun blotted out just before sunset.
Safety warnings
Stargazers are being warned to never look directly at the Sun without proper eclipse glasses, whatever the coverage. Glasses must display the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, and binoculars, a telescope, or a phone lens without a certified front-mounted solar filter should be avoided. A DIY pinhole projector is a free, safe alternative.
