Former England rugby captain Phil Vickery has caused a stir online after showcasing his new physique at a bodybuilding show in Hull last weekend. The World Cup winner says preparing for the competition has helped both his mental and physical health.
Vickery's health struggles
Vickery has previously opened up about his struggles and admitted he once considered taking his own life after struggling to come to terms with his probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) diagnosis two years ago. Several other players, including Wales internationals Alix Popham and Ryan Jones, have also been diagnosed with the same issue, with Vickery among over 1,000 players to take a concussion lawsuit against governing bodies including World Rugby, the RFU and the Welsh Rugby Union.
Bodybuilding journey
Vickery has said becoming a bodybuilder has helped him work through a number of difficulties, and came about after he had "an idea over two years ago to be in the best shape of my life" to celebrate the 20th anniversary of England's World Cup triumph. Having shed 6kg, Vickery won a medal at the UK Ultimate Physiques British Open Championships in 2024.
He now seems to have the bug, and looked full of confidence on stage at Hull's Connexion. Taking to social media, he posted a few snaps from the event, along with a caption explaining his motivation: "So team it’s been just over a week and have recovered enough now to show a couple of pictures of my body building competition I took part in for the @pca_official in Hull.
"I get asked all the time why, what for, what’s the point of it, how much money do you get if you win, and on and on.
"First and foremost the gym and lifting weights has helped me physically but mentally more than anything. I love the discipline, the challenge, the atmosphere, the camaraderie and simple fact it’s ******* hard work. You can’t fake your way onto stage you can’t hide behind anyone or anything.
"You’re physique is the reflection of your work. It’s not about anyone else for me it’s just you being the best version of you and being better than last time.
"One person who deserves a special mention from me is @davecampbell_purefitness who without his support guidance and fountain of knowledge it just wouldn’t be possible.
"He’s not just a coach he’s a friend a mentor that person who invests his time energy constantly looking for new ways.
"Listening to me and keeping me going when it’s the bad day.
"A true craftsman and someone who is so passionate about the sport.
"Thank you Dave we did together brother and I will always be grateful for those #littlebigthings."
Team-mates' reactions
A few of Vickery's colleagues were suitably impressed. Former England team mate Matt Dawson commented: "Bloody hell mate. No wonder that was so tough. Fair play you colossus…." Lewis Moody and James Haskell were among the others to show their support.
