Sexy Beast, the 2000 British gangster film starring Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley, airs on Film 4 tonight at 10.50pm. The film earned Kingsley an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
A star-studded crime classic
The film marked the directorial debut of Jonathan Glazer, who later directed Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest. It features Ray Winstone as Gary "Gal" Dove, a retired criminal living a tranquil life on the Costa del Sol with his wife, DeeDee.
That serenity is shattered when Don Logan, played by Ben Kingsley, arrives and pressures Gal into taking part in one final bank heist in London, masterminded by crime boss Teddy Bass, played by Ian McShane.

Sexy Beast unfolds into a succession of gripping confrontations, primarily between Gal's determination to remain retired and Don's increasingly forceful insistence that refusal is not an option. Matters come to a head when Gal implies that Don's true reason for visiting is his obsession with his friend's wife, Jackie.
Rated 87% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has stood the test of time critically. The site's consensus holds that the film "rises above other movies in the British gangster genre due to its performances."
Much of the online acclaim is directed at Kingsley's portrayal of Don Logan, widely regarded as one of the most memorable villain performances in British cinema. "Remember the Gandhi of Ben Kingsley? Wait until you see him here as Don Logan, a psychotic gangster, the British equivalent of Pesci in Goodfellas. Kingsley's work is more bizarrely eccentric. And more accomplished," one reviewer wrote.
Another described the film as "An absolute classic. Tightly written and well directed, Kingsley and McShane in particular, are outstanding." A third added: "Kingsley is terrifying in this movie, an absolutely stunning performance."

Legacy and prequel series
For his depiction of Don, Kingsley secured Best Supporting Actor victories from a host of critics' associations, including the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Toronto Film Critics Association, and received nominations for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award.
The film claimed Best Director and Best Screenplay honours at the British Independent Film Awards. Sexy Beast remains regarded as one of the greatest British films ever produced, and even spawned a prequel television series that premiered in 2024, centred on Don Logan's backstory.
