Self Esteem Opens British Airways ARC with a Bang(ing Set)

Self Esteem opened the British Airways ARC venue in spectacular fashion at the redesigned Kensington Olympia. The show was a thrilling start for the new music space, which is part of a £1.3 billion transformation of the historic landmark.

A Spectacular New Venue

The British Airways ARC is located on the rooftop of the redeveloped Olympia. Visitors ascend a three-storey escalator to a promenade lined with eight restaurants, an 83-metre long LED video canvas, and three al fresco terraces with city views. The venue itself boasts a 3,800 capacity and a self-serve bar.

Michael Volkert, CEO of Olympia, described the atmosphere as electric. “I’ve only been part of the team for the last six months, but it’s been in development for six years. To see the excitement on the team’s face and the reaction of people as they come onto the estate is incredible,” he said.

More Than a Music Venue

The transformation includes office space, two hotels, and a food and beverage program. Next year, the British Airways Theatre will open with a 1,500 capacity. Lucy Noble, Senior Vice President at AEG, emphasized the venue’s intimate feel despite its size. “From an artist’s point of view, it feels very connected to the audience. From the audience’s perspective, the stage doesn’t seem far away at all,” she noted.

Upcoming shows include Van Morrison, The Black Keys, and Zac Brown, plus comedy and talks. Noble believes live music is thriving in London. “The live experience is crucial for the entertainment industry and for people to have communal experiences,” she said.

Self Esteem’s Triumphant Return

Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known as Self Esteem, delivered an exhilarating set combining theatricality, dance, and music. Her first show in months included anthems with feminist messaging and Northern wit. She ended by saying, “I am exactly where I need to be.”

The evening marked a bold new chapter for Olympia, a venue with a rich history, having hosted Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. For more information, visit britishairwaysarc.co.uk.
