Scotland's Best Restaurant Crowned at UK Awards

Scotland's best restaurants have been named as part of a prestigious UK-wide list, with seven venues across the country included in the roundup. Topping the list for Scotland is an Edinburgh restaurant that continues to set the benchmark for modern Scottish hospitality.

National Restaurant Awards 2026

On Tuesday, June 9, the winners of the National Restaurant Awards were announced, featuring 100 eateries as the definitive guide to the UK's best restaurants. Timberyard in Edinburgh claimed the title of Best Restaurant in Scotland, ranking 25th overall in the UK.

Timberyard: A Family-Run Gem

Timberyard is a family-run, Michelin-starred restaurant located on Lady Lawson Street in central Edinburgh. Founded in 2012, it specializes in ingredient-led cooking guided by nature, working closely with local growers, foragers, and artisan producers. The restaurant earned praise for its sustainable approach and previously received a Michelin Green Star this year for its commitment to treading lightly on the land.

The judges stated: "Timberyard continues to set the benchmark for modern Scottish hospitality. Not only has it won Cocktail List of the Year in 2026, it has also been named the best restaurant north of the border. Opened by Andrew and Lisa Radford in 2012 and now led by the next generation—Ben, Jo and Abi Radford—the restaurant has built an international reputation for ingredient-led cooking, sustainability and a deeply personal approach to dining."

Set within a striking former warehouse near Edinburgh Castle, Timberyard remains one of Scotland's most influential and distinctive restaurants. Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian dining culture, the restaurant celebrates Scotland's natural larder through seasonal menus with precision, restraint, and creativity. Much of what is served is made in-house, with ingredients sourced from the kitchen garden and preserved through fermentation, pickling, and curing.

Sustainability sits at the heart of the operation, with a zero-waste philosophy and a root-to-shoot, nose-to-tail approach extending from the kitchen to the drinks programme. Timberyard offers lunch and tasting menus, with the former priced at £80 for three courses and the full tasting menu at £160 per person. Dishes include roe buck with blackcurrant and salted Kampot, venison tartare with anchovy and sourdough, and cultivated mushrooms with wild alliums. The restaurant serves only wild meat such as deer, game birds, wild boar, and hare, avoiding farmed animals, and offers ethically sourced fish and shellfish as well as vegetarian and vegan menus based on seasonal Scottish produce.

Other Scottish Restaurants on the List

Following Timberyard, Lyla on Edinburgh's Royal Terrace ranked 33rd overall, offering a menu focused on line-caught fish and sustainable shellfish from the Scottish Isles. The 17th-century Kinneuchar Inn in Fife placed 35th. The Glenturret Lalique in Crieff and The Kitchen in Edinburgh came in at 44th and 49th, respectively. Dogstar and The Palmerston, both in Edinburgh, rounded out the Scottish entries at 51st and 65th.
