Ryan Moore has been inducted into the British Racing Hall of Fame and will be honoured alongside legendary Shergar at an official ceremony at Ascot on Qatar Racing British Champions Day on October 17.
The three-time champion jockey, who has amassed an incredible 230 Group/Grade One victories throughout his distinguished career, praised the "brilliant people" who have contributed to his remarkable riding career.
Moore's journey from jump jockey to international star
Moore was eager to acknowledge those who supported his journey from his early outings as a jump jockey for his father Gary to becoming a globe-trotting international star.
"I'm honoured to be inducted into the British Racing Hall of Fame. I've been fortunate to work with some brilliant people throughout my career," he said.
"My family's support was so important when I was starting out, and Richard Hannon showed lots of faith in me in the early days as well. I'm also particularly grateful to Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O'Brien for the opportunities they've given me over the years."
"It means a lot to be recognised alongside them and others who have achieved so much in the sport."
Shergar's tragic tale and Hall of Fame honours
Moore becomes the 14th individual inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Lester Piggott, Vincent O'Brien, Pat Eddery, Queen Elizabeth II, Frankie Dettori, Willie Carson, Sir Henry Cecil, Sir Michael Stoute, Prince Khalid Abdullah, Steve Cauthen, Aidan O'Brien, Jack Berry and Major Dick Hern.
The Aga Khan's ill-fated Shergar, who claimed the 1981 Epsom Derby by a record-breaking 10 lengths before triumphing in the Irish Derby and the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, is recalled as much for his tragic fate after being kidnapped in February 1983. The middle-distance star, who was never seen again, becomes the 14th horse to receive the honour following Frankel, Brigadier Gerard, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dayjur, Dancing Brave, Galileo, Sea The Stars, Stradivarius, Pebbles, Dubai Millennium, Goldikova and Enable.
Panel's unanimous decision
Sophie Able, co-chair of the Hall of Fame panel, said: "It was the unanimous decision of the panel that Shergar and Ryan Moore are both truly deserving inductees to the British Racing Hall of Fame.
"Shergar remains one of the most celebrated and iconic horses in British racing history, while Ryan's outstanding career and achievements in the saddle have established him as one of the great jockeys of his generation."
